Our Marine Mammal Stranding Team provides 24/7 stranding response and coordination for whales and dolphins in distress. We are first responders for nearly 139 miles of Florida’s east coast and 1,800 km of estuarian waters, including the Indian River Lagoon.

This important research focuses on predicting and preventing impacts from human disturbance, habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. A healthy otter and dolphin population is a signal that the Indian River Lagoon is doing well and supporting animals that rely on healthy fish and invertebrate animals.

The Indian River Lagoon is one of the most diverse estuaries in North America, supporting hundreds of species of wildlife, including bottlenose dolphins and the North American River otter. Research efforts are critical to determine how the ecosystem functioned prior to human disturbance.
